Understanding Energy Ratings

What You Need to Know About HVAC Energy Efficiency

Saving energy means saving money. Learn about key energy ratings, why they matter, and how to improve your HVAC system’s efficiency.

Key HVAC Energy Ratings

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)
Measures a furnace’s heating efficiency. A higher AFUE percentage means a more efficient system.

HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor)
Measures a heat pump’s heating efficiency. The higher the HSPF2 rating, the more energy-efficient the unit.

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
Measures an air conditioner’s cooling efficiency. A higher SEER2 rating indicates better performance and energy savings.
(As of January 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy updated its minimum standards and testing from SEER to SEER2.)

Each of these ratings ranges from low (least efficient) to high (most efficient). The higher the rating, the more you can save on energy costs. At Harry Clark Heating and Air Conditioning, we help you find HVAC equipment with the highest efficiency ratings for optimal savings.

How to Reduce HVAC Energy Consumption

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the average household spends over $3,000 annually on energy. Here are three ways to lower your HVAC costs:

1

Choose ENERGY STAR® Certified Equipment

ENERGY STAR is a label from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency that identifies energy-efficient products with 15–25% energy savings. Even if you’re unsure of a unit’s specific rating, an ENERGY STAR label ensures it will consume less energy than a non-certified system. Nearly half of all YORK® air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces carry this designation, helping you save on daily operating costs.

2

Get the Right-Sized HVAC System

Efficiency isn’t just about performance—it’s also about proper sizing. Many homes have oversized HVAC systems, which waste energy, cause uneven temperatures, and increase maintenance needs. Undersized systems, on the other hand, overwork to meet demand, leading to early wear and breakdowns. Our team at Harry Clark Heating and Air Conditioning can assess your home and recommend the best-sized unit for maximum efficiency and comfort.

3

Upgrade Your Thermostat for Smarter Control

Smart and communicating thermostats help fine-tune your HVAC system for better efficiency. These devices actively monitor and adjust your system, ensuring precise temperature control. Pairing smart thermostats with indoor air quality products can enhance comfort while reducing unnecessary system operation, ultimately lowering energy use.
