Strange sounds, system age, increased heating cost, increases in dust, or frequent repairs. Any one or more of the above could indicate its time to consider a new furnace and duct system. Nationally furnaces last 17-20 years. In the Bay Area, because of our moderate climate, furnace tend to last 20-30 years. A 30-year-old furnace in not efficient by today’s standards. Most of furnaces of that age use lots of gas and electricity. All new forced air furnace have electronic control motors that use 80% less electricity. Most furnaces are above 95% AFUE or gas efficient.
